Itinerary

For ease of finding your flight, our tour will start and ends in Surabaya. The tour is also possible to be finished in Bali, crossing via ferry to Bali from East Java.

Day 1: Arrival in Surabaya

Arriving in Surabaya, meet your driver and be transferred to your hotel to rest. If you arrive in the morning or afternoon, you can explore the city or visit one of the most famous mall, Tunjungan Plaza, and be amazed with the amount of Mall it has.

Day 2: Morning Walking Tour and Off to Malang

Elegant white colonial building with intricate details in Surabaya, East Java, Indonesia.

Trace a vital chapter of the legendary Spice Trade Route and see traditional commerce still in motion. Meet your guide at the De Javasche Bank Museum, a landmark since 1829, to uncover its colonial history. From there, walk through the city’s heritage, crossing the Red Bridge and passing the Syahbandar Tower and Kalimas warehouses. After navigating the bustling energy of Pabean Market and Panggung Street, refuel with a delicious local lunch, the perfect way to digest Surabaya’s rich history before heading back.

Afterwards, your journey continues where you will take approx. 2-hours drive to the city of Malang. Malang is East Java’s breezy mountain retreat. It’s a welcome break from the city heat, full of fresh highland air, colorful “rainbow” neighborhoods, and old colonial streets. Grab a bowl of the famous local bakso, wander the leafy boulevards, and definitely try the apples—they’re what the region is known for. It’s the best spot to kick back and recharge before you head toward the volcanoes.

Day 3: The Roaring Waterfall, Part I

A beautiful waterfall cascades in West Nusa Tenggara, surrounded by lush greenery and rocks.

Trade the city streets for a day in a hidden canyon tucked deep within the foothills. Madakaripura isn’t your average waterfall; it’s a massive, circular gorge where water curtains fall from towering, mossy cliffs like a natural cathedral. Legend has it that the great general Gajah Mada meditated here, and once you’re standing in the mist, it’s easy to see why.

To get the most out of the day, we recommend taking the scenic 3–5 km walk from the parking area to the trailhead rather than using the local motorbike taxis. Those bike rides don’t meet safety standards and can be quite risky, so walking is the best way to stay safe and actually enjoy the jungle surroundings.

Since you’ll be walking right through the spray, you’re definitely going to get wet! Be sure to pack a change of clothes and a bag for your shoes so you can stay comfortable for the ride back. After you’ve had your fill of the falls, head back to Malang to dry off and enjoy a relaxed evening in the highlands.

Day 4: The Roaring Waterfall, Part II (with cameo of Bromo!)

Enjoy your last breakfast in Malang, then meet your driver to continue your adventure. You will be transferred to a transit point, where you’ll hop into a local Jeep to explore the park’s wilder side. Entering through the quiet Coban Trisula gate, you’ll avoid the usual crowds and head straight into the heart of this volcanic wonderland. Your afternoon starts with a 1.5 km walk to the hidden Coban Pelangi Waterfall before driving across the surreal, ash-covered Sea of Sand. You’ll then trek to the very edge of Bromo’s smoking crater rim for a front-row view of the earth’s power. Finish the day at a stunning viewpoint to watch the sunset over the peaks before your driver drops you off at your hotel in Cemoro Lawang to rest up.

Day 5: The Roaring Waterfall, Part III (With Golden Dawn Off Bromo!)

Tumpak Sewu Waterfall cascading through green forest in East Java, Indonesia.

Rise before the sun and head out in a Jeep to witness a golden sunrise from the highest vantage points. Once the light breaks, you’ll head across the ash-gray plains of the Sea of Sand to reach the base of Mt. Bromo. Climbing toward the summit feels like walking on the lunar surface, offering a rare perspective of this active volcanic giant. Afterward, head back to the hotel to refresh and enjoy breakfast before moving on to Lumajang.

Along the way, you will visit the majestic Tumpak Sewu, famously known as the “Niagara of Indonesia.” This 120-meter curtain of water spills into a deep, emerald canyon, requiring a light jungle trek and river crossing to reach its base. It’s a spectacular sight from both the rim and the valley floor, perfect for capturing the raw beauty of the rainforest.

Please note: Since Bromo is an active volcano, access to the crater rim is subject to daily safety status updates provided at the park entrance. While the crater may occasionally be closed, the viewpoints usually remain accessible unless a major eruption occurs.

Day 6: Quiet Entrance to Kalibaru

Vibrant green rice fields and palm trees under a cloudy sky in North Sumatra, Indonesia.

Head out from Lumajang on a scenic drive toward the quiet highland retreat of Kalibaru. This journey leads you through the rural heart of Java, passing vibrant rice paddies and small villages that showcase the island’s daily rhythm. As the road climbs higher, the air turns crisp and the scenery shifts into rolling hills draped in coffee, rubber, and cocoa trees. It is a peaceful transition from the rugged lowlands to the serene plantation belt, providing a front-row seat to Java’s authentic countryside before you reach your mountain escape.

Day 7: Wild Shores: The Sea Turtles of Meru Betiri

Travel through remote villages and the lush coffee and cacao plantations that define rural Java. The final stretch into Meru Betiri National Park is a true off-road adventure, navigating rugged tracks and crossing rivers to reach the Sukamade ranger station. Your stay at the guest house is intentionally simple: a rustic escape with no AC and traditional “bak mandi” bucket showers, offering an authentic, off-grid night in the jungle.

After an early dinner, walk out to the sands of Sukamade Beach for one of nature’s most moving rituals. Under a canopy of stars, wait for a signal from the park rangers to witness giant sea turtles hauling themselves onto the shore to lay their eggs. To protect these ancient mariners, silence is essential—no flashlights, smoking, or loud sounds. Watching a creature that has traveled thousands of miles across the ocean return to this exact spot is a humbling, poignant sight. Once the cycle is complete, return to the guest house for a quiet night’s sleep.

Note: Since we are guests in a wild habitat, turtle sightings depend entirely on nature and cannot be guaranteed.

Day 8: Return to Civilization

Trade the deep jungle for the coast after an early checkout from the Sukamade ranger station. The journey back winds through lush plantations and quiet rural landscapes, offering one last look at East Java’s wild interior. Along the route, pause to refuel with a traditional local lunch before arriving at your beach-front hotel just outside Banyuwangi. This peaceful coastal retreat provides the perfect setting to unwind and trade the sounds of the rainforest for the gentle rhythm of the waves.

A Special Opportunity: If you wish to help tiny hatchlings begin their life in the broad ocean, please coordinate with your guide a day in advance. They will check with the park rangers to see if a baby turtle release is possible, as these events depend entirely on the natural hatching cycle and the rhythm of the wild.

Day 9: Silence By The Beach

Spend your morning lounging by the pool as ferries glide across the water in the distance, or find a quiet spot on the manicured lawns to soak in the tropical salt air. The villa’s blend of traditional wooden architecture and lush gardens creates a calm, slow-paced atmosphere that feels worlds away from the rugged trails. Use this time to nap, catch up on a book, and fully recharge your energy before the midnight climb to Ijen Crater. It’s a day designed for nothing but relaxation and the gentle rhythm of the sea.

Day 10: Early Morning Miracle in Ijen

A solitary miner with headlamp gathers sulfur in baskets at a quarry during night.

The adventure starts at the stroke of midnight, trading the city lights for a 4WD journey through quiet villages and fragrant coffee and clove plantations. As you wind into one of Java’s last remaining rainforests, the air fills with the sounds of the jungle and the scent of damp earth. From the ranger station, a steady trek leads you upward toward a breathtaking summit 2,380 meters above sea level.

At the peak, a surreal world reveals itself: the vast, turquoise acid lake of Ijen Crater, framed by plumes of white steam and brilliant yellow sulfur deposits. The landscape feels like another planet—desolate yet vibrantly alive. Witness a scene of incredible human resilience as local miners navigate the rocky paths, carrying up to 80 kilograms of sulfur in bamboo baskets. After taking in this dramatic spectacle, walk back down the mountain and return to your hotel for a well-earned rest.

Safety & Participation To ensure everyone’s well-being on this rugged volcanic trek, we require all participants to sign a safety waiver. This is a standard measure because Mt. Ijen is an active volcano with steep, uneven terrain and natural sulfur gases. Since the climb happens in the dark and involves significant physical effort at high altitude, this waiver ensures you are fully informed of the environment and are prepared for the unique nature of this adventure. Alternatively, you can do the sunrise trip that starts at 04:00 without visiting the Blue Flame.

Day 11: The Return to the Capital

A passenger train travels through a scenic rural landscape with mountains and fields.

After your time on the coast, a short transfer brings you to the station for a classic rail journey back to Surabaya. For six hours, you can sit back and watch the Javanese heartland unfold through your window, gliding past emerald rice paddies and rural villages.

Arriving in the bustling capital of East Java, the evening is yours to spend as you wish. Whether you prefer to unwind at your hotel and reflect on your travels or take one last stroll through the city’s lively streets, it’s the perfect way to wrap up your time in the province.

Day 12: Departure

Garuda Indonesia Airbus lifting off from the runway, capturing the excitement of air travel.

When it is time to say goodbye, your driver will meet you for a comfortable transfer to the airport in time for your departure flight. This marks the conclusion of our journey together across the landscapes of East Java. We hope you carry home a piece of Java’s spirit and wish you a smooth, safe journey to your next destination.
