Starting in Medan, you’ll journey into the lush jungles of Bukit Lawang, where the allure of dense rainforests and the thrill of encountering local wildlife set the stage for an unforgettable experience. From scenic walks to an exciting jungle trek and tubing expedition, each day promises a new encounter with nature and the cultural richness of this diverse region.

After trekking in Bukit Lawang, the journey continues to Berastagi, known for its stunning volcanic landscapes and cool highland climate. Along the way, you’ll explore the charming Dokan Village, home to traditional Batak Karo architecture, and stop at the breathtaking Sipiso-Piso waterfall. These stops highlight the vibrant cultural and natural heritage of the region before reaching the serene shores of Lake Toba and the tranquil island of Samosir, where time seems to slow down.

Samosir offers a mix of relaxation and exploration with a walking tour of the island’s unique Batak culture, historical sites, and scenic landscapes. After a free day to unwind or further explore, the trip culminates with a return to Medan, where you’ll spend the night at an airport hotel, ensuring a smooth and relaxed departure the next day. This route is designed to offer a balanced and immersive exploration of North Sumatra’s diverse landscapes, communities, and tranquil beauty.

Itinerary

If you prefer to skip Medan on the day of your arrival to go and spend more time in the jungle of Bukit Lawang, be sure to arrive in Medan before noon.


Day 1: Arrival in Medan

Your journey begins in Medan, the bustling capital of North Sumatra, known for its rich multicultural heritage. Upon arrival, you will be greeted and transferred to your hotel, where you can settle in and relax. Take the evening to explore Medan’s vibrant culinary scene, which is famous for its diverse flavors influenced by Malay, Chinese, and Indian cultures. Popular spots include Merdeka Walk, where you can enjoy local street food or try traditional Indonesian dishes in a local restaurant. Overnight in Medan.

Day 2: Morning Transfer to Bukit Lawang, Afternoon Free

After breakfast, you’ll embark on a scenic drive to Bukit Lawang, a charming village located on the edge of Gunung Leuser National Park, famous for its lush rainforests and orangutan population. The journey takes approximately 4-5 hours, winding through lush landscapes and small villages. Upon arrival in Bukit Lawang, check into your accommodation and spend the afternoon at your leisure. You can explore the village, enjoy a riverside walk, or relax and soak in the tranquil surroundings in preparation for the adventures ahead.

Day 3: 2D1N Jungle Trekking and Tubing

Today, you’ll embark on an unforgettable jungle trekking experience in the Gunung Leuser National Park. The trek starts early in the morning, guided by local experts who will lead you through dense jungle paths where you may encounter wild orangutans, macaques, gibbons, and other wildlife in their natural habitat. Your guide will share insights into the ecosystem and wildlife behavior. After a full day of trekking, set up camp in the jungle for the night, surrounded by the sounds of nature. You’ll also get to experience tubing on the river, a fun and refreshing way to journey through the jungle landscape.

Day 4: End of Trekking – Afternoon Transfer to Berastagi

After breakfast in the jungle, continue trekking for a few more hours, enjoying the final leg of your jungle adventure before returning to Bukit Lawang by mid-morning. Once back in the village, you’ll have time to freshen up and have lunch before embarking on a transfer to Berastagi, a cool highland town known for its volcanic mountains and vibrant markets. The drive to Berastagi takes around 5-6 hours, passing through scenic landscapes, plantations, and mountainous terrain. Upon arrival, settle into your accommodation and enjoy a relaxing evening.

Day 5: Berastagi to Samosir Island with Stops at Dokan Village and Sipiso-Piso Waterfall

Today, you’ll journey from Berastagi to Samosir Island, stopping at two iconic locations along the way. First, visit Dokan Village, a traditional Batak Karo village where you can learn about the unique architecture and customs of the Batak people. Then, continue to Sipiso-Piso Waterfall, one of Indonesia’s tallest waterfalls, which plunges 120 meters into the valley below and offers breathtaking views of Lake Toba. After enjoying the scenery, you’ll continue to Parapat, the gateway to Samosir Island, and take a ferry across Lake Toba to reach your accommodation on the island.

Day 6: Samosir Walking Tour

Today, we are dedicated to exploring Samosir Island, an island rich in Batak culture and history. You’ll set off on a walking tour to visit several significant cultural and historical sites. Highlights include the ancient stone chairs in Ambarita village, which are used for traditional meetings and judgments, and Tomok village, home to the famous tomb of King Sidabutar. The tour offers a deep insight into the traditions, architecture, and way of life of the Batak people. Return to your accommodation in the afternoon.

Day 7: Samosir Free Day

Enjoy a full day of leisure on Samosir Island. You can relax by Lake Toba, take a swim, or rent a bicycle to explore more of the island on your own. Alternatively, consider joining optional activities like a boat ride on the lake or a cooking class to learn traditional Batak recipes. This free day lets you unwind and enjoy the serene beauty of Lake Toba at your own pace.

Day 8: Samosir to Medan, Overnight in Airport Hotel

Enjoy your breakfast and relax before you leave Samosir Island, take the ferry back to Parapat, and then continue with a long but scenic drive to Medan. You’ll pass through plantations and small towns, getting a final glimpse of North Sumatra’s diverse landscapes. Upon arrival in Medan, check into your hotel at the airport and enjoy a good evening rest for the day.

Day 9: Departure

Your adventure in North Sumatra concludes today. After breakfast, depending on your flight schedule, you can return to your room. Alternatively, you can walk to the departure gate of your flight.


Information on your tours

– The price is calculated based on the number of people mentioned above. Price is based on per person, and the final price of the trip depends on the departure date and trip planning, including accommodation and activities you choose. The route is merely a sample and can be customised further to adapt to your holiday wishes.

– All of your tour elements are based on private tours, with the exception of the trekking in Bukit Lawang from July to August due to limited Rangers and an increase in visitors. Do not worry; your tent area will be separated from that of other travellers.
– Our driver doesn’t speak English; therefore, we expect them to primarily communicate the start time, locate a toilet stop, and make stops upon request. However, we will not provide additional services beyond that. Of course, they are happy to assist passengers with luggage and ensure a safe and pleasant journey.

– Private English-speaking guides are available for an additional fee to enhance your journey. You can also reach a 24/7 assistance line with English-speaking support, which is provided in your travel documentation.

– If you prefer a higher level of accommodation for your trip, feel free to check with our team for the additional cost.

– International flights, visas, and travel insurance (strongly recommended) are not included in the price.
